Mahavir Tyagi was a prominent Congress leader, freedom fighter and famous parliamentarian. He was born on 31 December 1899 at Dhabarsi, Moradabad District in Uttar Pradesh. He spent eleven years in jail during freedom struggle. He is counted among the founders of the District Congress in 1920. Later, he chose Dehradun as his political base. He was elected for the Lok Sabha from Dehradun, Bijnaur (north-west) and Saharanpur (West) in 1952, 1957 and 1962 respectively and served as Union Minister for Revenue and Expenditure from 1951 to 53. Shri Tyagi also served as Union Minister for Defence Organisation from 1953 to 57 (Pandit Nehru also held charge as Defence Minister till 1956). He continued to be a part of various committees even after 1957 and became Union Minister of Rehabilitation a few years prior to the death of Jawaharlal Nehru.
