Victor Hugo was born on 26 February 1802 and was the son of an important man. His father was the General in Napoleon's army. He received an excellent education, after which he wrote some brilliant poetry in addition to novels and plays. He was even exiled once. When he died on 22 May 1885, there were at least a million people in his funeral procession. Such was the extent of his popularity.
