Focus on What Matters

Why is it so hard to live well amidst the chaos and noise?
While you might think this is a problem of the modern world, it’s a timeless issue.
2000 years ago, the ancient Stoics talked about the exact same challenges we’re facing today, like:

  • How can we find inner peace?
  • What does it take to be happy?
  • Can we become more resilient?

The answers can be found in the philosophy of Stoicism. I’ve used the philosophy since 2014 to change my life and career.

Focus on What Matters is a collection of 70 letters/essays I wrote about different aspects of life, from happiness, wealth, health to relationships and much more.
These letters, inspired by the original works of the Stoic philosopher Seneca, serve as reminders to focus on the right things in our chaotic lives.

The goal of the original “Letters from A Stoic” by Seneca was to share Stoic ideas with his friend, Lucilius, who had hedonistic tendencies and lived a busy life.
Focus on What Matters is inspired by those letters. It will show you:

  • Simple thought exercises to become resilient and focused
  • How to live in the present moment every day
  • Authentic Stoic values for a life of happiness
  • A way to build more discipline

In short, this book helps you to live well despite the challenges of daily life.

Behold the Leviathan

In defiance of the stereotypes trotted out by yesterday’s pundits, modern India’s rise is both unusual and unexpected. It is unusual because some of the sharpest economic improvements are being observed in those sections of Indian society which were thought to be the most disadvantaged: women, oppressed castes and rural India. It is unexpected because of the widespread view. Until a couple of years ago, India’s democratic construct was inferior to China’s single-party state.

In Behold the Leviathan: The Unusual Rise of Modern India, Saurabh Mukherjea and Nandita Rajhansa provide a gripping picture of how 1.5 billion Indians are combining to spectacular effect to create a range of social and economic outcomes which have no precedent in any emerging economy. For example, India now has as many chess grandmasters as the United States, and the expertise of its scientists has guided India’s space modules to the dark side of the moon, a feat no other country has achieved.

In this zeitgeist-defining book, the authors have also explored, through pathbreaking research, why the vast majority of India’s companies are struggling to grow their profits even as a small minority of these companies have gone on to build globe-girdling franchises worth tens of billions of dollars.

Written over two years, during which the authors crisscrossed India hundreds of times and interviewed over fifty of the country’s leading thinkers in business, policymaking, media, and academia, Behold the Leviathan has been hailed by the cognoscenti as ‘a firecracker of a read,’ challenging decision-makers, policymakers, and opinion leaders to reevaluate their long-standing perceptions of India’s development.

Beauty Queens of Bishan

In Bishan, the busiest suburb of Singapore, thirteen small beauty parlours coexist quietly, offering haircuts, bikini waxes and facials at no-nonsense prices. All that changes when a swanky new salon opens. D’Asthetique (Beauty Is Skin Deep) is run by April Chua, the stylist to the stars.

April’s plan for Bishan includes controlling her competitors through a new society, NAILSO (Neighbourhood Alliance of Independent Lifestyle Service Operators). The only person who dares to protest is chubby Gurpreet Kaur, owner of Monty Beauty Spa (Beauty from Within, Fourth Wax Free).

Both have clients in the upcoming Grand Glam Singapore beauty contest. Will April’s shoo-in Candy Kang prove yet again why she is Singapore’s sweetheart? Or will Gurpreet’s client, Tara Chopra, prove a star on stage as well as in court?

The winner will determine who will lead NAILSO; the loser will never be able to show her facials again. Can there only be one beauty queen of Bishan?

The Cloud Chariot

It’s 100 years since Kalinga was devastated by Ashoka, and the kingdom is now re-emerging from the dust. Now, under the Mahameghavahanas, a new and able dynasty, the country has not only freed itself from foreign reign but is also experiencing a cultural and patriotic resurgence. But palace politics, internecine rivalries, the external threat of invaders as well as internal threat of traitors keep King Mahameghavahana Kharavela busy and unsettled. Unable to focus on rebuilding the kingdom to its zenith and his dream of returning to Kalinga the looted Jina idol from Magadha.

And then a stranger enters the kingdom and becomes an integral part of the court. Rudravarman is a polymath, military strategist and a brilliant warrior. But his antecedents are mysterious, and his objectives unclear. Why does he so jealously guard his past? And does he truly want to not only serve the king, but fulfil his dream of a resurgent Kalinga?

A brilliantly researched historical thriller set in the first century BCE.

The Ten Trillion Dream Dented

It is the aspiration of every Indian to live a good life. The measure of which is better health, education, housing and income. Only a developed economy can fulfil this aspiration of its people. India is a growing economy and dreams of becoming a $10 trillion economy. In The $10 Trillion Dream, the author provided the road map to fulfilling that dream. However, the performance of the Indian economy in the past few years seems to have shattered the $10 trillion dream.

This book presents a comprehensive and critical analysis of the performance of the Indian economy under the Modi government from 2019 to 2024. It critically examines the policy measures taken by the government and identifies the reasons why India can’t become a $10 trillion economy by 2035. Foregrounded in rigorous research, The $10 Trillion Dream Dented is an unputdownable work that should encourage policymakers to rethink their approach to managing the Indian economy.
